About

Ethan Smith

Founder of White Sage ... and the person who does the reading.

Who is behind White Sage?

White Sage is led by Ethan Smith ... founder, and the person who actually does the reading. He works from Pinehurst, North Carolina, self-taught the way builders are self-taught: by shipping real systems and being accountable for whether they work. And the reading is only the front of it ... behind him sits a development company he leads and a bench of vetted specialists who come in when a build calls for them. You never get handed to an account team. The person who found the problem stays accountable for fixing it.

Why does White Sage exist?

Because owners keep paying for templated work that doesn't move anything. Somewhere right now a business is paying monthly for a website nobody visits and a chatbot that irritates its customers ... and the agency that sold it never checked whether any of it made a dollar of difference. That still makes Ethan angry. White Sage is the opposite bet: find the real problem, put a dollar figure on it, and build only what earns its keep.

How does White Sage actually work with clients?

Every engagement starts with The Read: two conversations and a readout that puts a dollar figure on the one or two problems costing you most ... findings that are yours to keep either way. If something's worth fixing, the fix is scoped as its own decision, with the numbers in front of you. Diagnose first. Quantify. Then build ... and only what moves a number.

Who builds the software?

Custom software runs through Brightlight Agentics, the software development company Ethan leads alongside White Sage. Same standard, same accountability: White Sage owns the diagnosis and the outcome, and Brightlight builds what needs building.

The standard

Quality shows up in the parts you'll never look at ... the naming, the error states, the handoffs between systems. The work gets built like it's signed, because it is.
